What to Prepare for a Video Production Kickoff

Use this kickoff checklist to align your audience, message, assets, approvals, and video placement before animation production starts.

A video production kickoff turns a broad request into a brief the creative team can act on. The goal is to agree on the audience, message, format, available materials, and how feedback will work before detailed production begins.

1. Define the audience and goal

Describe who the video is for, what they already know, and what you want them to understand or do after watching. Use one primary goal to guide decisions about the script, visuals, length, and call to action.

2. Confirm the placement and format

A homepage explainer, product walkthrough, paid ad, and sales presentation have different contexts. Identify where the video will appear, whether it needs multiple aspect ratios or cutdowns, and whether viewers are likely to watch with sound on.

3. Bring product and brand materials

Useful materials may include product access, current interface screenshots, feature documentation, approved claims, brand guidelines, logos, fonts, and examples of videos you like. For 3D product work, share available models, CAD files, product photography, dimensions, and material references. Note anything confidential or not approved for public use.

4. Agree on the story and scope

List the essential points the video must cover and the details that can be left out. Clarify the deliverables, languages, versions, and whether scripting, illustration, voiceover, sound, or 3D modeling are part of the project. A focused scope makes it easier to judge whether new requests affect timing or budget.

5. Set review and approval roles

Name the people who will review the script, storyboard or style frames, and final video. One person should consolidate feedback for each review round. Share any legal, product, or brand approvals that need to happen before publication.

6. Identify dates and dependencies

Work backwards from the desired launch date. Note deadlines for product access, copy, assets, legal review, voiceover, and final delivery. Identify dependencies early, such as an interface that is still changing or an unreleased product feature.

A concise kickoff checklist

  • Audience, goal, and one main message.
  • Video placement, format, and required versions.
  • Product and brand assets, plus approved claims.
  • Scope, review owners, and approval steps.
  • Target dates and known dependencies.

If the video is still being planned, review the relevant SaaS explainer video or 3D product animation service to clarify the kind of production support you need.
